Most people use Claude as a chat window: you type a question, it answers. Cowork, in the Claude desktop app, goes a step further. It lets Claude work with files on your computer and carry out multi-step jobs — while you watch and approve what it does.
What it’s good for
- Organizing files: sorting a messy downloads folder into folders by customer, job, or month, and renaming files so you can find them.
- Working through a pile of documents: reading a folder of invoices or quotes and pulling the key numbers into one spreadsheet.
- Producing finished files: turning your notes into a formatted document, spreadsheet, or report.
How you stay in control
You choose which folders Claude can work in. Claude lays out what it plans to do, and you can check the results before relying on them. Start with a copy of your files the first few times, until you’re comfortable with how it works.
Should your business use it?
If you spend time every week shuffling files, retyping numbers from one document into another, or building the same report over and over, Cowork is worth a look. If you mostly need help writing emails and answering questions, the regular Claude chat may be all you need.
A few ground rules
- Only give access to the folders a task actually needs.
- Keep sensitive customer and financial records out unless you’ve thought it through.
- Check the output — especially numbers — before you use it.
